SCOUTS BUZZ
NFL teams who believe in a strong running game are taking a big liking to Missouri Western OG ROGER ALLEN (6031, 318) who has a 3rd-4th round grade from some while most have him in the 5th round range. Don’t be surprised if he improves his 40 time and flashes excellent raw power at the NFL Scouting Combine and really moves up the board from the late 7th round to PFA range teams had him coming into the season.
Division III All-American Wheaton College CB/RS PETE ITTERSAGEN () saw his season come to an end against Mount Union in a 45-24 defeat but not before putting together an impressive senior year that should be enough to get him in a training camp. He returned one kickoff return and two punt returns for touchdowns this year on top of his stout defensive play that saw him tally 65 tackles, three picks, and 12 breakups.
James Madison has two players receiving heavy interest as likely free agent pickups after the draft in QB RODNEY LANDERS (6000, 217) and FS MARCUS HAYWOOD (6001, 188). Landers lacks the top end speed to be drafted but could be a steal as an undrafted free agent as a running back or safety. Haywood is considered the team’s second best prospect at this point after a productive year. Don’t be surprised to see both players make a practice squad or active roster.
RUNNING BACKS (Grade- C-)
Joique Bell, Wayne State (MI) - Bell's first two seasons were nothing short of spectacular and then tapered off as a junior due to injuries. His size (5'10 7/8, 225) and speed (4.5) are ideal for scouts who like big bruising backs. He has been named an All-American twice and is a three-time 1st team All-GLIAC selection. He rushed for 1,152 yards and 12 touchdowns as a junior and has the size and speed to be a productive big back at the next level. Keep tabs on Bell as he could have a huge senior campaign.
William Ford, South Carolina State- He lacks ideal size at 5'8 3/8, 187 but has good speed (4.41 and has been highly productive throughout his career. Ford was named the MEAC Offensive Player of the Year as a junior with 1,499 yards and 13 touchdowns, averaging 6.1 per carry. He will have to bulk up this year but will be given a harder look due to his ability on special teams as well. He averaged 25.9 yards per return on kickoffs in '06 and has returned at least one kickoff each of his three seasons with the Bulldogs.
