Example: In a very close game that came down to the final seconds, Harding defeated Missouri Southern State 17-15 and was led by the performance of their big senior WR #9 KURT ADAMS (6040, 198) with six catches for 81 yards, including a 33-yard strike catch in the third quarter for a touchdown.

In a surprise score Charleston (WV) defeated Tusculum 31-14 and got a standout performance from senior DE #97 CHRIS ALMONTE (6034, 265) with four tackles, two tackles for loss, two sacks, a hurry, one fumble recovery, and one pass breakup. The fumble recovery by Almonte happened to be in the end zone thus giving him a touchdown on the play. We have not seen tape on him yet but Almonte is a player we will continue to monitor because of his size and production.

It is not usual that the punter or kicker is considered the hero in a game but that is what happened in the nail biter between Millersville and Assumption Friday night. Millersville senior K/P #41 JOHN BANZHOF (5114, 215) was stellar in all phases of the kicking game with seven punts for 305 yards, averaging 43.6 per punt, a long of 55, and two inside the 20. He nailed a 28-yard field goal in the third quarter and hit all three point after attempts to seal the victory. Banzhof was also solid on kickoffs with six for 333 yards, averaging 55.5 per kickoff.

Wayne State (MI) RB #5 JOIQUE BELL (5107, 225) appears to be at full health and ready to show what he flashed before injuries started plaguing him the last two years. Bell ran for 135 yards and two touchdowns on 32 carries and one catch for 11 yards in their 31-13 stomping of Mercyhurst. Bell’s scores were key as he helped them jump out to a 14-0 lead early with a 3-yard scoring run in the first quarter and then sealed the game for good with a 1-yard score early in the fourth quarter.

North Greenville All-American senior DE #93 ANDRE BERNARDI (6022, 265) had a solid return to the playing field after sitting out most of the 2008 season with an injury posting six tackles, including two for loss, and one sack in their 28-0 loss to Mars Hill.

Despite the loss to Edinboro, West Liberty State had a standout performance from junior RB #34 KEVON CALHOUN (5090, 185) in a breakout game after playing in just two games last season before a season ending wrist injury. He finished with 153 yards and three touchdowns on just 18 attempts, averaging 8.5 per carry.

While we have not yet evaluated Midwestern State junior QB #18 ZACK ESKRIDGE (6030, 215) it appears he could be a prospect to watch next year as the former TCU transfer is off to a hot start as he led them to a big 41-0 win over New Mexico Highlands in the season opener. He threw for 219 yards and three touchdowns on 20 of 26 passing, with no interceptions. He also ran for 19 yards. It did not take him long to put the first ball in the end zone with a 14-yard strike to Tyron Morrison in the first quarter and then followed that up with back to back strikes as he scored on a 5-yard pass late in the second quarter and a 24-yard pass early in the third quarter. Keep a close eye on this prospect...
